Topic tags/keywords: walnut rough sawn craigslist

Well I just unloaded my first Craigslist purchase; 170 lineal feet of rough sawn black walnut for $150. The are boards that the guy said were too small to send to the folks who buy from his mill. They range in length from 8 to 12 feet and width from 5 to 12 inches from 3/4 to 1 1/4 in thickness. I like what I got and think I did okay. However, since I am quite new to this rough sawn purchase business, I’m curious if I got had by what I got.

$150 for 170 feet (lineal) – good price?

Karson it was cut about 6 weeks ago, so I’m stacking it and setting it off to the side for a bit. I will definitely keep my eyes open for this guy again. He had more, but my budget said $150 was all I could spend.

Sounds like a fair price for green, is there much sap wood or figure?

Here’s what I got, not much sapwood to speak of. He says he also has cherry for 0.75 per foot which seemed reasonable.

170 feet of walnut

I appreciate the feedback folks. Buying wood this way is new to me and I’ve been fooled before in other areas. The problem now is I have to find a permanent place to put it. I hate going out to the shop and having it taunt me for the coming months while it dries.

It seems most of the jobs we have gotten lately have been walnut. Consequently we buy alot of it. We’re millwrights and purchase rough sawn dried lumber. We buy from various parts of the country. For those of you that might have an interest in any other walnut, the cutting size has now been reduced to 12”.

For those of you who may not see the significance of this, it means generally speaking, all the big walnut has been cut and “they” are now willing to take trees as small as 12”. If you happen to have/find walnut that is better than 12” ( or close) you have premium wood.

Looks like some very nice lumber. It may be a good idea to place your stickers about 16” apart and make sure they are straight up and down from each other so the boards don’t bow on you as they season.
