Topic tags/keywords: box trim end grain border cross grain

If I were to add trim around the perimeter of a board, say for a box top, do I need to worry about movement and grain direction? Take the “drawing” below. The grain of the board goes with the equal signs. If the trim denoted by ’|’ runs in in the opposite direction, could I run into problems if I were to just glue the trim onto the end grain? If so, how would I deal with the cross-grain situation?

Yes you will need to be concerned about movement. If you totally surround a board with “trim”, the interior board needs to float inside that trim. Otherwise the inside board will push the joints apart.

You could make a breadboard edge. Here is a guy doing exactly what you want to do.

That’s an interesting link. I think he only added trim to 3 sides, and expects the back edge to show the results of the swelling and contracting. I still feel if you wrap all for sides, the miters will pop at sometime. Unless your center board is something stable like plywood.
