Topic tags/keywords: question

So they demoed a house two doors down from me today, and as a self proclaimed pack rat i went to forage through the pile to see what could be found (with permission of course) During the treasure hunt, my wife found a piece of limb from a tree that got taken out with the house and inside it was glowing. I mean glowing bright green like a light stick, and every piece of that limb was glowing inside where the limb was fractured. I’m pretty much at a loss here and it seems like i may remember a breif glimpse of this in elementry science class but i cant say. Anyone know what makes a tree glow? Also, as near as i can figure it is a locust tree if that rings any bells?

Cool! Near as I could google, it’s probably a bioluminescent fungus – sometimes called ‘foxfire’.

Sorry, I have to… “Their back!”
Sounds really cool whatever it is!

Yes! That glow is probably FoxFire. I have only seen it one time in my 60 years and that was when my sons were in the Boy Scouts. We were taking a 50 mile canoe trip, camping along the Buffalo River and pulled some drift wood out of a brush pile one night and it started glowing. Spooky stuff.

If i recall right i have a chunk of it outside the shop door, i’ll go try to find it and if its still glowing i’ll do like a lights on lights off picture series to show it. I thought it was just crazy as heck!

Yes! i love that stuff! and the little worm things too! It is one of the coolest things i have ever seen! I had to google all about it too – seen it a few times round here, but wanted a sciency explanation of why or how!
