Topic tags/keywords: jewelry box drawer lift hinge

i’d like to build some jewelry boxes with a drawer that is hinged as you lift the lid, the top drawer is pulled up as the lid is lifted, as in this:

is there a way to reliably calculate the placement of the hinge support arm no matter what size box you’re making?

My way of working out something like that is to make mock ups out of medium weight cardboard (poster board, for example). Use pins for the pivoting points. Play with it until you make it all work. Not very scientific, but sometimes trial and error works. The idea is to not make blunders with your expensive materials.

In fact, that’s the process I used in designing my riving knife for the Unisaw.
