Topic tags/keywords: question

A woman who runs a rug hooking studio recently asked me if I could make rug hooks for her. There are only a few suppliers out there and she’s looking for something custom. Turning the handle should be easy, but I can’t find a source of unhandled hooks. I’d appreciate any ideas.

After posting this morning figured better find out finer points of “rug hooks.”

There was a turner that specialized in both crochet & rug hooks, not sure if met him a symposium or read an article been so long ago. But would show the lady this kit and see if will fit the bill.

Thanks to both of you for the info.

I was sure I’d looked in PSI, but of course I was probably focused on rug hooks. My client did say that many hookers (yes, that’s what they call themselves!) use crochet hooks.

The two articles from woodturningonline.com were really helpful … the guy that turns his own hooks is pushing the limits of my meager talents, but maybe I’ll give it a try.

I could not find any suppliers just rug hooks, remembered some turners specialized in bobbins, crochet hooks & needles. Wood is not as strong as bone, metal or plastic. Handles really don’t need much embellishment diameter & length more important.

I would destroy a lot of wood getting the hook right so would said no from the git-go!!

Other than buying metal rods and cutting that hook on one end and making length longer or shorter putting bend in some not sure could accommodate that lady. Cost of buying different size rods 3/32’s to 10/32’s or 2mm to 31mm to go with ever kit they are doing little daunting.
