I assume it is because they can be used with an insert. Lathes also have 1 1/8, 1, 3/4 and many other sizes.
If not used with an insert then stores would have to carry chucks with each spindle size. Nova alone has about 15 different size inserts so for their three different chucks the store would need to stock 45 just to have a selection of one each.

I assume they were designed as a universal accessory but I don’t know anything about the history of scroll chucks.

Only lathe around today that I know with a 1 1/2” x 8 TPI spindle is PM90 and outboard spindle thread 1 1/8”. Since came with an outboard faceplate/hand wheel just assume those are left hand threads.

Catalogs and other web sites used to list lathe names & spindle sizes for faceplates and chuck threaded inserts.

Of course The Oneway is NOT threaded, and has a taper where the insert fits in, much better system, more accurate than thread that has to have clearances for the threads to fit between male and female threads.

And yes a 1 1/4 insert needs more of a difference than a 1/8” for the tread to be tapped into, male and female.

What brand of chuck are you referring to? VicMarc, Oneway and Hurricane all have inserts that are designed to be matched with your lathe.
