Line carving conundrum

Topic tags/keywords: line carving help question

Hi guys, new member here.

I’m a beginner and I’ve only done one carving. It was a line carving, which sounds lame so I chose a relatively tricky pattern of a buffalo standing on a big feather with some grass poking up all around. It has some pretty fine lines in it. This being said how am I supposed to finish it? I’m thinking I should stain it but how? Just…how?

Make a couple test cuts in similar wood, then test drive some stain and clear coat and see what you think. If you’re happy, all that’s left is, use the product with the effect you want. For example, oil base poly for a slightly amber finish. A waterborne for a more true finish…......
