i know we get alot of talk about spam on this site. from what i’ve gathered, the current solution when one pops up is to just PM martin and he deletes it. it seems to me that this would require alot maintainence on martin’s part. would it be possible to just let the users police the site themselves? you could add a “report as spam” button on each forum. then it work something like if in the first few views it gets flagged a certain percentage of times, the post is automatically deleted.

Not a real good idea Bent, as I see it you could then delete anything that didn’t suit you before others had a chance to see it. I am not plagued with spam, and it should be left up to the site officials, possibly reported by the members. Very good thought.

From my experience as a coder… this may be more trouble than it is worth to implement. But I suppose if Martin wants to do the work now, it’d be less work later, no?

I wonder how much spam there REALLY is.

i havent noticed much spam here at all.. in fact compared to every other board iv ever been on its surprising how little spam this board has. what i have noticed is a few and only a few people with thin skin that get all up in arms at the first hint of it. in the past few months iv seen more posts complaining about spam than accual spam… its the internet where anonymity rules. there isnt a public board out there thats completely immune to tards.. imo this site is amazingly well put together and im sure the mods dont mind hitting the delete button occasionally.

if you need an arguement as to why not to have public flagging its simply this. trolls love open flagging sites where they can make 20 accounts to use to harass people anonymously. and we dont want to attract the trolls now do we?

I’m not even sure what SPAM is (Except for Canned Meat). Whatever it is I don’t seem to be experiencing it.

Unless!! (and I am asking for clarification please) If someone becomes a Member here and all He/She EVER does is Post Links about something “Interesting” that we should all “Have a look at”, that are ALWAYS connected to His/Her Web Site? Is that Spam?

If it gets to be more than a week or so old the Posted “Link” doesn’t take you to the Topic Posted because that Topic has now expired on their site. Or is that considered to be just a Plain Old “Pain In The Gluteus Maximus”?

If it is. I hit 5 of them tonight because I follow a few “Buddies” that had Posted to Posts that were anywhere from 50 to 150 Days old. None of the “Links” took you to the “Linked Topic” where you where suppose to go but they did take you to that LJ’s Site. ALL of them with a LOT of Commercial woodwork ads.

Lis: I noticed your comment about how much Spam there REALLY is. Am I close?

Yes? No? Please All.

Bad idea bent
Martin is on most every day and he takes care of the spammers we don’t have that many just ignore them and Martin will deal with them.

I remember when spam was fried and made into a sandwich.
I had one spam today on one of the several websites I visit daily. Lucky, I guess.

As a Systems Administrator for mid-size company I can say there is no way you can stop all the Spam and Martin does an excellent job keeping it off the site. On any given day my filters catch anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 messages but a few still make it through.

I would be interested in hearing from Martin as to how many he stops before we ever see them.

Well said, Ron. I don’t want to post exact numbers here but you’re right.. our automated spam filters are catching lots of spam posts everyday. These posts don’t get through to the site. I’m constantly keeping them up to date to filter new spam.

However Report button will be added in the near future as an easy way to flag and report spam that will get posted anyways. I know it will be easier than sending me PM.

Thanks for good discussion everybody.
