Topic tags/keywords: complaint

I don’t want to start a war with any legitimate woodworkers from Asia that are members of this site, but I have a complaint regarding the function of this site, and that is, that anyone can sign up without being approved or vetted by an administrator. Two obvious Chicom’s looking for distribution networks or trying to peddle their wares here have signed up within the last few hours and have posted in the Woodworking Trade & Swap area as in they believe it is for (Import/Export business). Personally, this turns me off completely and makes me want to leave LJ’s for another woodworking site. Other sites have an approval process for membership before an account becomes functional, and I believe strongly it’s something that should be adopted at LJ’s as well as a way to send a message to a moderator/admin to investigate complaints and ban these individuals.

Believe me, I don’t like to complain unless it’s something I feel very strongly about, but this has to stop. I don’t want to confront these individuals directly in their posts, because I don’t believe it is my place to do so. I will however point them out, because I think other members should boycott providing them any response to their posts.

Look this happens in all forums it has nothing to do with vetting or approval. It happens less on this site then others with an approval process. Everyone on here is smart enough to ignore these guys or just make jokes of their posts.

It is annoying, I know, to see posts that are blatant advertising and not related to woodworking. But simply report the spammer to Martin and he will remove them shortly.

This is a minor inconvenience and it’s easy to ignore. The perpetrators are not all from China.

I don’t want to start a controversy here, but I find the label “Chicom” offensive. I’ve had the privilege of representing my company (before I retired) in numerous transactions with Chinese companies. I have traveled there extensively and I have nothing but respect for the hard working people of China. Virtually every Chinese company that transacts business with the U. S. is independently owned (not state owned) and they are examples of China’s transition to a capitalistic economy.

We should not belittle them. We should encourage their transition to capitalism. Russia tried to become capitalistic overnight and it failed due to massive corruption. China is engaged in a gradual, but steady, transition and it is working much better.

When someone comes up with a solution for this, they will probably be the richest person in the world.

I agree with Jesse. Welcome to the internet. You get tolls of all varieties. Report them – there’s no sense in some vetting procedure or a waiting time. They’re easy to ignore if you want to.

Martin does a great job with this site. No changes needed.

Martin added a “block user” option. Maybe you can do that to this individual and any others that are blatently advertising their wares without participating in the LJ family theme of wood workers.

By the way, don’t you need to buy a custom designed cane?????

I don’t see the need for any change in the site. If I see something that is clearly over the line (spam, postings with a political agenda outside of the Coffee Lounge, etc.), and after trying to give the poster the benefit of the doubt decide it is just too inappropriate to ignore, I let Martin know, and it gets taken care of.

In not quite a year on LJ, I’ve only seen two that were bad enough to take action on, and each of them disappeared quite quickly. Martin does a marvelous job of keeping LJ on topic, IMHO.

Have your say...
