Looking at the option of building a Murphy bed. I noted a kit for the hardware which is currently on sale (http://www.rockler.com/deluxe-murphy-bed-kits-vertical-mount) and took a look at the plans available at that webpage. Scrolling through the 22 pages of instructions – well, makes me question if I’m up to this level of challenge (would definitely be my biggest project to date). I have seen a number of Murphy beds posted here on LJ and am hoping some of you might give some insights on what skill level you think is needed to pull this off. Also, if anyone has used a particular kit/brand for hardware that was user-friendly, I would appreciate your comments. Thanks!

I built one using that hardware. The instructions are pretty good. Just read them well several times then take it one step at a time.

I built the same kit (queen vertical). Looks great and the instructions are very good. I got quality plywood and hardwood from the local lumberyard. Building it was very enjoyable. Finishing was very time consuming and frustrating. But this was my first project. Probably spend around $2000+ total.

$300/kit
$600 for plywood
$300 for wood
$150 stain+lacquer
$100 knobs and pulls
$100 drawer slides
$400 new mattress
$? new tools

Good luck!

Yes…the total cost! That may be a factor in whether I pursue this or not. Thanks for the breakdown. In particular I like the last “item” as a project is only as good as the new tool required to complete it!
