Topic tags/keywords: question cocobolo

So I’ve hatched this idea of making a ‘59 Gibson Les Paul with a Cocobolo laminated top. I know Cocobolo can be very variable in color and I’m looking for the more reddish type with some sapwood so I can have a strip of sapwood down the center of the bookmatch. How thick of a piece of Cocobolo do I need for this and where/if is it possible to find it? Is this idea even possible or has Cocobolo become too rare? Another idea is that if I can’t carve the top, could a two piece top be pressed like an archtop guitar?
this is the color I’m looking for, more or less red. (photo courtesy of Hobbithouseinc.com)

Hey Benjamin,

I’m more of a player than a maker, so I can’t directly answer your questions. However….

Were you planning on a carved top or a flat top? A carved top will require a thicker piece of laminate than a flat top.

You might try searching eBay for “guitar blank” or something similar. You should be able to see what dimensions are being sold. That should give you an idea of what you need.

Just buy a set on ebay, from LMI or other suppliers.

You might check LMI first, they have a lot of cool
looking woods and some are pretty inexpensive.

As I recall there’s a Mexican wood that looks a lot
like cocobolo that is both cheaper and maybe not
as allergy aggravating. Cocobolo gives me hives.

I’m doing the carved top, do you know how thick the carved top is from the edge to the top?

If you haven’t read it I highly recommend Benedetto’s book.
