Hey everyone. I have been kicking around an idea to create a 6’x6’ room in the corner of my woodshop (that is actually a two car garage). The shop is 22’x22’ square. I share the shop with the Water Softener and the 2nd Fridge. There are two large windows on the opposite wall so, wall space is very limited. I keep thinking that creating the 6’x6’ room in the corner, where the Water Softener already is, I could move the Fridge in there (hopefully keeping some of the dust off it) and increase the amount of wall space by 12’, for shelves and MORE STORAGE :-) . I could put the compressor and eventually a dust collection system in the room. If I insulate the walls it could reduce the noise in the shop.

Some of my concerns. Will I feel too cramped in the shop now? Is wall space really what I need? Maybe a simple storage unit would be sufficient?

Any input, ideas, advice or comments are greatly appreciated. Oh by the way, I have a friend that is willing to stop by and help tomorrow if I decide to do it. So, if anyone has any experience that might see this as a bad idea please share.

Thanks,
Dean

Choices, choices. If you did eventually put you dust collector in there, it will create a lot of super fine dust that will mess with your fridge if you put it in there also. You will also have to put a hole in the room to let the air out that the dust collector sucks in. It’s best to put a good filter in the hole.

You could vent it outside, but if you did then if you were ever to add an air conditioner, to overcome your hot humid weather, you would throw all your cold away.

If you do add the room, you could always put shelves on the outside of it.

Just some thoughts.

It seems that protecting the water softener and the fridge are good reason to add a couple walls. 6×6 is not too much to give up. If it were me, I’d build it. Actually, I bought a 4×6 shed to hold my wife’s gardening equipment so I could use the extra space in the shop (a 2 car garage). She didn’t need electricity or plumbing though.

Hi Dean;

I hate to tell you this but you are the only one who can really answer that question.

You’ve obviously given this a great deal of thought, the pros and cons etc…

If you really don’t know deep down inside, flip a coin.

Good luck;

Lee

Creating a closet to enclose and protect those two items might not be a bad idea. You could put the air compressor in their too but not the dust collector.

Gary has good points on the dust and air pressure should you enclose the dust collector in a closet.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I flipped a coin and made the closet. (I’m not sure if I won or lost the toss :-) ) I’ll post some pictures soon.
