Menards is currently offering an Altocraft 8.25inch miter saw for all of 39.96. (I believe it’s either a 30 or 40 dollar discount) I’m going to try watching craigslist for deals on a nicer model this week, but otherwise I think I’ll try this thing out. The Menards return policy is generous enough that there’s little risk. The little unit I was playing with at the store yesterday seemed incredibly well built mechanically, with the motor housing looking like the one under-spec’d part. The base appears to be cast metal; I didn’t take the time to determine if it was aluminum or iron, but I’d assume aluminum from how easy it was to move.
Just thought I’d see if anyone has messed with this guy or a similar 8-1/4 inch unit. (Which may well be the same)
For the record, I’m just looking to supplement my track saw; after a few mistakes I’m willing to admit it’s far from the best way to crosscut/miter small boards.
