I was hoping to build something for my dad for father’s day, but I sort of gave up on that idea because I didn’t have a jointer or planer. So fast forward to today and I found a great deal for both a planer and jointer on Craigslist and am picking them up after work.

I’d like to make something for him just because I think it would be more personal than going out and buying something. Obviously, time is running short now, and on top of that this will be my first real woodworking project. Up until now just about everything I’ve built has been out of dimensional lumber, so I’m looking for something I can complete in a day or two that’s more complex than a birdhouse but still not too complicated.

I have a table saw, band saw, radial arm, router (no table yet), miter box, jointer, planer and common hand tools, so ideally it’d be something I can build that doesn’t require a ton of sanding or any mortise and tenon joinery. Thanks much in advance for any advice.

A bandsaw box would be fast…use super glue…fun and you could make it to sit hon his dresser.

A small sign saying how great he is an happy fathers day plus the date.
Whatever you make will be treasured by him forever.
