I have a dust collector, table saw and (future) jointer that run at 220v and all have protection on the motors and the manufacturers have stated that I can run them off of my existing 50amp 240v circuit.

Since the total of any two machines plugged into this circuit (dust collector running + one 220v machine) that would run simultaneous on this 50 amp circuit would be 25-30 amps, am I ok with running 4 240v outlets on this circuit without using a sub panel? The single outlet which is currently on this circuit is wired with 8 gauge wire 3 feet from the breaker in the main panel.

Can I run 4 240v outlets using 8 gauge with my furthest outlet running 20 feet away?

I don’t believe the requirements I have stated here necessitate the installation of a sub-panel, but I would like everyone’s input here on the subject.

Do you have room in your box for an additional breaker?

Do you want GFCI protection?

Do you want to split off a 110VAC circuit (or two) on that same feeder.

Note that the running Amperes is usually a fraction of the peak current so you’ll have plenty of headroom on the Amps.

#8 is overkill for 20’, you can use #10 THHN (indoors) @ 50A without issue.

The original outlet was likely a drier that used the full load as heat, the inductive loads of power tool use much less once they get started.

I don’t have any room in the main panel or the sub panel for an additional 220v circuit. It’s full. This circuit was installed when the house was built as a “General ” 220v outlet (it’s one of the 220v circuits on the right side in the main panel pic with the outlet for it directly beneath the main panel, pic 3). I don’t think I need GFCI protection on a 220v circuit, do I? I have 2 separate 120v circuits, one which has GFCI protection on it for use of my 120v tools.
