Topic tags/keywords: question blade tablesaw

I have recently been given a Forrest Woodworker II saw blade that has surface rust in a circular pattern around the blade just underneat the teeth. I was wondering if it would be safe to clean the blade using electrolysis? I have removed rust from several shop items over the years using this method with great results but have never used it on a hardened steel blade or bit. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Others have used that. But also others have used citric acid. You can find blogs here on doing that.

Jody,

If it truly is just surface rust I’m wondering if you need to clean it at all. As long as the teeth are clean and sharp and in good shape I don’t think I would do anything to clean off the rust. Maybe apply a little oil and rub it down to prevent further rusting. Maybe a little scotchbrite and elbow grease. I’d probably just run it and see if the normal use didn’t just clean the rust off.

I guess I’d worry less about a little surface rust than trying an unknown process on brazed on teeth. As you can tell I don’t really have a clue what electrolysis would do to the teeth but I’d lean toward “when in doubt, don’t”.

I’d rather have a blade that wasn’t shiny than a blade I was worried about.

You do need to make sure the teeth are clean and sharp. You should be able to find a thread or two here on LJ about cleaning blades if needed. Forrest will resharpen the blade for a reasonable cost.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will try some vinegar and a scotchbrite pad first. The teeth show no signs of wear and are quite sharp. I think the blade had only been used once or twice prior to being stored.

Happy new year!!
