Every couple of years I try to take different magazine subscriptions to broaden my understanding of different topics. Of course, woodworking is the main magazines I take. Over the years I’ve taken subscriptions on dozens of different topics from animal husbandry, to psychology, to quilt making. I usually take out a two year subscription figuring that in two years time most of the main themes of the topic have been covered so I don’t renew. (Of course, all of you know even if you don’t renew you still get magazines past the end of the term of your purchase – they are hoping that you’ll decide to renew – I seldom do.) I prefer paper magazines and not ones to take as electronic forms. A paper magaziine does not need a battery and if I happen to lay it down on the bus seat or leave it at the restaurant table I’m not out much.
Now Ive decided I want to delve a little into military history. I know it’s a huge topic to tackle as there’s a lot of history considering how many wars have occurred over the centuries. I’ve been looking on the net and there are quite a lot more magazines and, of course, websites than I imagined there would be. I know that I can take trial subscriptions but for whatever reasoning I don’t like to do that – I’d rather dive right in.
So are there any military history buffs on LJs? If so, do you take any magazine subscriptions that you can recommend for me? I usually take a subscription to general magazine that covers a wide range of areas in the overall topic, but I also usually take a more specific magazine that focuses on one main topic. So I’m thinking for my specific topic I would like one or two that deal with the US civil war.
Thanks in advance.
