I cannot seem to find the answer I am looking for. I am in the “design on paper phase” of setting up dust collection in my shop. I am looking to buy the Harbor Freight 2hp with the canister upgrade by Wynn that many here have. I originally was going to have a bit more elaborate runs using 4” PVC with waste gates and using proper wyes and elbows, but am reading more and more that anything over 10’ from the dust collector and you are seriously compromised in collection. Anyone with long runs with this set-up? I am just looking for opinions on effectiveness of suction, not about proper grounding and such (don’t want to start that debate, thats a different thread. haha) Thanks, you guys have been very helpful with everything!

Also, do most people here with dust collection just roll their dust collection from machine to machine or hard plumb and just keep the runs short?

I have 50 ft runs of 4 inch pvc running to my jet 1.5 hp DC. Blast gates every where. Works well for me, even have one that goes to a 15 inch planer, never had any clogs, and I don’t glue any of the pipes together, I did this so I could clear clogs, but have never had any.

Pete_Jud, I didn’t even think about not bonding the pipes to be able to clear clogs. Good to hear no problems though. How is the suction at the far ends? I was looking to do about one 60’ run with 5 machines total and a blast gate at each machine.

You’d probably be better off with a 5” main run and branch to 4” at each machine.

Ger21, I had read that somewhere in one of the planning guides.

I had read elsewhere that the smaller 4” machine hook ups would not supply enough air and collection would slow once it got to the larger 5” main. Sometimes don’t know who or what to believe. I just don’t want to spend too much time setting up an elaborate dust collection only to have it not have enough suction at the other ends.

Personally, I would not spend a penny on any dust collection system until I had studied Bill Pentz’s work. He appears to have more knowledge on his site than at any other location on the net. Just go to
and learn the answers to these any many more dust collection concerns.

going to 5” pipes might or might not give you much – it all really depends on your DC, run lengths etc.

since you already have the DC, I would recommend making the best of what you have. try to keep the DC central to your machines, and place it closer to the higher CFM hog machines = planer/jointer, TS should follow next, and everything else can be further away. keep your runs as short as possible, and use blast gates to close all unused paths.

I use the HFDC with a wynn filter in a garage shop. Rather that moving the DC around I move machines to it (sounds strange but it works). I’m using about 10 feet of 5 inch flex hose with another 2 feet of 4 inch at the end so I can hook up to the 4 inch connections on most machines. The set-up does great on the 8 inch jointer and seems to be decent on the 16-32 drum sander. It misses some chips on the 13 inch planer if I’m running wide material. I’d say its just ok on the table saw. You could probably equate 10 feet of flex to some longer length of pvc in terms of resistance and that will give you an idea of the performance you’ll get from the set-up.
