Topic tags/keywords: show lumberjocks identity representative woodexpo 2011

Hey, everybody!

We’re starting to plan the WoodExpo 2011, a furniture and woodworking show within the New England Home Show in February. We haven’t made any official announcements, but we’re getting close and starting to poke around to solidify some ideas. We want to incorporate the internet woodworking communities into the show. So the question is: If lumberjocks were represented at a show, how would you do it? What makes this community special? What are some concepts that reflect Lumberjocks?

I’m not looking for a floor plan or anything, I’m still pretty new to community and I want to get a feel for it from all of you.

I think that ‘community’ is what it’s all about – It has nothing to do with skill, shop size, woodworking type etc. It is all about common bug for woodworking, and the common wish to share resources, knowledge, and being connected with others worldwide with similar interest in woodwork, whether they are pros, hobbyists, or just those that want to know about it.

The thought crossed my mind. Maybe a bit off topic but here goes- Is there such a show in the southeast? Atlanta, Charlotte, Birmingham are some cities that come to mind.

ping-pong betwiin people thats what makes this site so special (nearly everything can be shared
here and you know the suport will be there if you need it) and we can thank all the old members
that has been making this site so welcoming to enter and the new to continue the tradition
of being polite when other comment something that maybee can be heart as a rood thing

So what kind of furniture would this translate into? What are some furniture/woodworking projects that would represent what lumberjocks is all about?

Knothead- There are home shows all over the place. We have a unique relationship with the guy who runs this home show and he gave us the opportunity to develop a show within the show.

PurpLev said it well. Everyone is working for the good of the whole. Folks can ask questions; learn things; avoid purchasing mistakes; share knowledge; show off projects; exchange info not readily available anywhere else. It’s the sense of being connected with really creative and talented folks who know there are no bounds on what they can do.

maybe one of the things that represents lumberjocks is a piece of furniture… whatever it is… that’s half done. since generally it is a place where everyone comes for help and a lot of the projects although only built by one person are designed and thought up and contributed to by the whole community.

I dont think LJ’s could be pigeon holed into into just one piece of furniture or project. As the site has members from around the globe as does the projects. They form a wide and interesting group only bought together by one common thread, which happens to be wood.
The hints, guidance, inspiration and friendship can only be shown in the form of ones own creation.

I think the only way you could truly represent LJs is to have a display that is nothing more than a rough sawn piece of lumber. As already noted, our site has hobbyists, professionals, turners, box makers, furniture builders, carvers, the list goes on and on. If one was to build a display representing us, the question would not be “What is it?” the question would be “What will it become?”

My take,

I am VERY new to LJ but from what I am seeing, it seems like LJ is about community, support, and collaboration.

To Eli’s question on what would “represent” that at a show, what about a group build (like T-Chisel’s Federal Table Build)? Do the build as a lead-in to the show then at the show you can let people see the process as well as the final result.
