Looking for advise for selecting tools for turning bowls for beginners. Where to buy, what brands are trustworthy etc.

The hurricane bowl guage set Bruyet shared is a great set but they are pretty long so if you have a mini lathe as I do they area a little long. You might look for some with shorter shafts and handles. Benjamin’s Best makes a good one that is relatively inexpensive. Another good tool for beginners are the Rockler carbide tools. They are a little easier to learn to use than the bowl gauges, though they are a little pricey for what you get so look for other brands that might be cheaper.

See if there is a Turners Club in your area that meets regularly, and stop in, they are always eager to help a newbie.
