Define “better”. What does it mean to you?

The physics of it are pretty obvious but cast iron will have more mass and require more energy to come up to speed but will store more energy; aluminum will be the opposite.

I prefer cast iron for the reason Rick mentions—more energy storage converts to less bog down when cutting. You generally find cast iron on the better saws and aluminum on entry level and benchtop saws. That definitely says something.

I’ve used both… couldn’t tell a difference other than a bit longer to spin down.

Cheers,

It’s all about mass. Aluminum is cheaper and entry level saws with low HP need the low mass to accelerate up to speed. Bigger saws use the inertia in the wheels for smoother cuts. Of course all this is more important for cuts that limit the saw (i.e. resawing). For light duty cutting, the economic saw/material choice will be plenty fine.

Thanks all!! Looks lie Cast Iron wheels will be the way i will go.

We just bought a house o property that has a 30×30 shop. I sold almost all my tools when we downsized and now i will be rebuilding my tool inventory. going to be getting a Band saw, table saw and a lathe first then adding to that collection. I still have my drill press, scroll sat, planer and almost all my hand tools. Oh yeah, i still have my Jet DC too.
