Hello, I am new here but I am constantly thinking up projects for my husband to make. ;)
My latest project that I have in my head I am having trouble with the engineering for it. We have an engineer in the family so I could ask them, but they don’t deal with this sort of thing, so I thought I would go to a message board first.
I am wanting to make a platform that I can fit a twin XL bed under. The bed would slide out from under the platform so my son can sleep. The problem is, I want this platform to have a book case along the edge where the bed will slide out from. I am thinking I need to span 82 inches (roughly… I might need a bit more but I want it to be fairly tight when closed) with the ability to have a bookcase on top of it. The book case would be used for homeschooling my two children, so it would have heavy text books in it. At this point I am also unsure of the total height.
I am figuring that the best way to do this would probably be with steel but I am not sure what I would need. Would simple angle iron be enough or would I need something heavier like 2 inch square tubing steel? Is that hard to work with if the rest of the project is wood?
In case you want to see my idea in the big picture here it is. It will have a platform with a side mounted murphy bed that will come out. The platform will be 4 feet wide. When the bed is up, my younger son will be able to play or use the desk that will be in the bookcase. The bookcase will be 18 inches wide (deep) and will have some shelves facing the upper level (younger son) and some facing the lower level (older son). I am also planning lift up plywood on the side near the murphy bed to house extra storage (18 inches as younger son will have a twin bed). My hope is to make this in pieces that can make it so it isn’t permanent in my house should we have to move. Ideally the storage would have some sort of doors on it. I am debating making the desk like a secretary desk with a pull down door, or a desk drawer that would slide out for them.
Thank you for any help you can offer me. :)
