I am considering buying a new jointer in a month or two. Some things I definitely want is 8 inch wide parrallelogram beds, mobile base, and dependability. A machine that does not require frequent adjusting (hate to fight with adjusting machines). I have narrowed my search to two machines, The Grizzly g0490 and the Steel City 8” industrial (model 40605 ). I have a Steel City 18 inch bandsaw that I am very happy with and it came ready to use out of the box ( just mounted the table and blade and started sawing). I have never owned a Grizzly machine, and have read somewhere that they are more suitable for someone who does not mind making adjustments periodically.

What ideas and insight can you guys give me on this? Thanks: Mike

I have a 6” Grizzly jointer – works fine. Also have several other Grizzly machines in my shop. They all work well.

I have an 8” Grizzly. The tables were parallel right out of the box, and I haven’t had to adjust them. I had the same model jointer previously and it took some adjustment to get the tables parallel, but I never had to adjust them again.

I’ve heard great things about Steel City, but no first-hand experience.

Does anyone out there have experience with the Steel City 8” jointer?

I have an 8” Grizzly jointer with a spiral head cutter, and it cuts curly maple like butter. It is a great machine and very accurate.

Mike,

Any machine needs periodic adjustments not only Grizzly. I have machines made by all kinds of manufacturers and I do not see any difference in quality between Grizzly and others. I can highly recommend the G0490 jointer. I have mine for almost a year and I couldn’t be happier. It came well adjusted out of the box and it is easy to adjust. I have no experience with the Still City jointer so I cannot compare but G0490 seems to do well everything I want it to do.

Like Todd I also have an 8” Grizzly (G0543) with the spiral head cutter. It is fabulous on figured woods, I could not recommend anything else. It was perfectly adjusted right out of the box and the only adjustment I ever need to do it to is to occasionally adjust the fence if I have knocked it out of square. I would say that you can order from Grizzly with as much confidence as any other brand.

I have an 8” Grizzly 586 with standard cutter head (sniff). It has been a champ after some small adjustments. It does help if you have used a jointer before and know how they should run and work. If you have not used one, then I am not sure how you would know to adjust them.

You can’t beat the grizzly for value.
