Hi all, I have a 19th century lathe I’m trying to get running. I’m missing the four step flat belt pulley. I figured I’d turn one out of Baltic birch plywood or solid oak or maple. I’m planning on mounting the pulley on the end of a counter shaft.

My question is, how do I attach a 5” wide pulley to the shaft? I researched it but the only thing I found were folks glueing it on. Is there some sort of bushing or insert I can use? What about the screw that locks the pulley on the shaft?

Thanks

You would probably get a ton of responses if you posted this question over at OWWM. For starters, here is a good thread you might find interesting: Making a wood flat belt drive pulley ??

Thanks Brad, that pretty much answers my question. A pulley sandwich.

I made a wood step pulley from layers of ipe alternated 90° to one another, bored out the center and trued on the lathe. I wouldn’t use commercial plywood as you run the risk of it delaminating and bad consequences. You could also build a segmented pulley without much trouble.

Three ways to attach a pulley, keyway, grub screw, stop collars.

Maybe but you’ll almost definitely get a nastygram from Keith Bohn for whatever reason he can think of that day. Some excuse to show the newbie who is boss hog.
