Topic tags/keywords: ash unfinished

Hi there.

Yesterday I purchased a piece of ash below from someone who only sells lumber like this. To me, it looked like there were a couple watermarks across the bottom of the piece but he said they’re natural lines within the wood and that when it’s finished with oil, those lines won’t be noticeable.

I’m wondering if
1) it is natural lines vs a watermark
2) would those lines be evident once sanded smooth and finished with oil?

Thanks for any thoughts.

I had a water mark on a piece of cedar very recently that look just like that. It was VERY shallow and came right off with the first shallow pass of a planer.

Water mark.
It’s measured in FBM. You must be in Canada.

I vote water mark also. I recently had the same marks in some cherry I had stored in my shed. Like Clin my mark came out with a few shallow passes through the planer.

Thanks for the responses everyone, much appreciated.
I’m glad to hear it should plane out. Time to get to work.

This is a great forum!

It’s a non-issue.
