Topic tags/keywords: question

How come I keep seeing all the slashes in titles around here lately? Seems to happen mostly when someone uses an apostrophe.

I see them too, you aren’t crazy. But, I have no clue why they are there.

As I understand it, there are sites like ‘fark.com’ where slashes actually do serve some sort of purpose, I’m just not sure what it is and I never go there. So it may be a habit of those who spend lots of time on satirical news sites. Might signify the writer’s sense of sarcasm or questionable factoids or otherwise not to be taken seriously. Where are these slashes you speak of?

I just assumed that the poster was trying to attract attention … but what do I know?

There are two typical reasons for this if it wasn’t intentional buy the author.

First (and most common), is when someone types their message in something like Microsoft Word and they are using a strange font, then they copy and paste the message to a forum. If that font is not installed on the computer you are using the Web browser makes a guess on how to render the characters. Alpha Numeric characters are pretty straight forward it is the special characters the browsers have problems with.

(It could also be a case where the font isn’t installed on the web server hosting the forum – then it is totally out of anyone’s control.)

In Mozilla’s Firefox you can look at your font settings under:
Tools > Options > Content > “Fonts & Colors” > Advanced

In Internet Explorer you can set your security setting (at your own risk) to try and download the fonts:
Tools > Security tab > Select Internet > Custom level button > scroll down and enable “Font Download” > click ‘ok’

The second cause is the message was typed on a non western English keyboard.

Looks like some fat finger typos and some attention grabbing. I do a lot of fat finger typos, try to get em, but not always in the first read or two ;-(

It has been awhile since I have done any programming for the web, but you’re probably seeing ‘escape characters’. In the programming languages used on many websites, some characters have a special meaning, and will only appear if they are ‘escaped’. Though the text body on LJ’s takes apostrophe’s and single quotes just fine, they won’t show up in the subject line unless they are ‘escaped’ (it happens automatically).

I think it’s a secret code of some of the elite members here : )
LOL …I noticed them on other posts as well lately , and just assumed it was part of the posters title for whatever reason they needed to post it that way.

Okay, should be fixed now. I introduced a small bug in the code while working on the recent project’s score update. It was small but it took me some time to find it. I came close to it after rereading this thread so thanks for testing this issue.
