I have a project where I need to apply a clear gloss finish over a vinyl sticker that is applied to a piece of baltic birch. I’ve been told a solvent based finish will melt the vinyl, which seems reasonable, but I am more concerned about adhesion. Will a standard water based varnish/poly adhere to vinyl? If not, what might one use for this application?

My cousin uses polycrylic over vinyl stickers, works for her. She has one of those machines that cuts them out she sticks them pieces of wood, artsy home craft stuff. But id make a test piece to be sure. (not always possible I know)

If you still have the sticker backer with the excess sticker material on it, cut a few pieces of the excess, stick them onto a scrap piece of BB and go over them with the target finish to seek your answer.
