Well guys and gals February 16th is coming up quick – looks a lot closer now that the end of the year is approaching.

I’m going to start seriously planning the get together and getting things lined up. I’d appreciate getting an idea of how many may be coming and get some ideas on what you would like to do as far as a “program.”

I’m hoping we can get several of us to do small demonstrations and/or lectures on something they enjoy doing.

I’m also thinking of trying to do a gadget swap and/or wood scrap swap – maybe do that in a “Chinese” gift exchange format.

I’ll provide the main foods, if anyone wants to bring anything special, that is, of course, welcome.

Please let me know if you plan on coming. I live in Arlington if that helps you plan.

Thanks all.

Hello Betsy,

I will have to think of some demonstration that I can show. I also have all kinds of small pieces of “scrap”
wood that I just can’t throw away.

Looking forward to it.

Gary

Cool – sounds like I’m going to have a house full. If anyone has a topic they want to share with the others that would be great. My shop is not the latest and greatest but it’s good enough for showing techniques, etc. I promise it will be cleaned and straightened up to!

Trying to come up with some ideas on what we could do little talks on at our gathering.

Would any of you guys be interested in doing a small talk on routers? I’ve got a plunge router and a table mounted router that we could work with. This could cover the basics or be a technique that you’ve picked up.

Maybe a lathe talk on turning technique. I’ve got a Jet mini lathe we could work with. My tools are probably not as sharp as they could be so you’d probably would want to bring your own tools.

Speaking of sharp. Anyone want to tackle some of that topic?

How about selecting lumber?

Of course, we don’t have to do any of that, we could just sit around and talk that big project tale that I’m sure we could come up with, or just go with the flow of things. And of course, there’s the eating part of this “picnic.”

This is going to be fun. I’ve started cleaning my shop and have got a couple of door prizes and some stuff to do a swap with. I’m still trying to find a different venue in case we have more people than I can handle at my house. So far though I think my house will work just fine.

While cleaning I found some really cool wood I forgot I had. The neighbor from back home (growing up in Ohio) gave me some cutoffs about 6 or 7 years ago that I put in a box and forgot about. They have some great grain patterns. I’m going to post pictures later, but they are pretty cool. Will probably put one up for the swap.

Just in case any of you have allergies – I have two cats and a large dog. I’ll put the cats in the back room and plan to have a friend dog sit the big girl. She doesn’t do well around a lot of people all the hub bub freaks her out so it’s safer to have her go to day camp.

Steak is done – gotta go. Looking forward!

Betsy,

I’m the new guy on the block (in two ways: new to this forum and new to woodworking). Rob sent me a message about the Texas folks and said I could throw my name in the hat. I would love to TRY to be there, if that’s ok to say. I have a 15 year old step-daughter with cancer and we are in a massive chemo attack right now and I’m not sure about our schedule that far out, so if you will allow me to say if possible I would love to be there. If you need a better commitment than that, so you can plan better, then I understand and maybe I can make it another time. Let me know if it’s ok and thanks Rob for bringing this to my attention.

Consider yourself invited! I certainly understand your situation. I hope your daughter feels better soon. We’ll have a good time and hope you can make it.

Looking forward.

Betsy,

I will bring some samples of exotic wood that I have and talk about their characteristics.

That’s great Gary. I’ve got some small pieces that you might be able to identify for me.
