I picked up this plane today. It says lakeside on the iron and other than that there is only one other marking: M4.
Obviously it was made for Wards.

However, the receiver is not something I have seen before. The frog is adjustable but there is no rib slot in the frog.

The lateral adjustment looks to be stanley, but the casting on the plane is thin. Casting thickness compared to another plane:

Any idea who made this?

The plane is a Marsh,

Marsh H.C. Marsh Tool Co. of Rockford Ill. 1915-1924.

I doubt the lakeside iron is original.

Is the thin sole of any concern?

I’ve never tuned a Marsh, or at least not one like that one, but from what I’ve heard they are a decent plane.

I’ve seen them, but just never bought them.

Because it’s a #4 and I don’t have one, if you’re interested in making a trade for a better known brand let me know. I wouldn’t mind having it in my collection, but I suppose if I were you I’d just tune it and use it.

Thank you for the offer. I have taken it apart already and I am half way toward tuning/refinishing it. If you are in the phoenix area and would like to try it out once finished, then let me know.

Have your say...
