Ok so I was sitting reading last night a book “Hand Tool Essentials” by Popular Woodworking that I got for Christmas. (I know, I didn’t wait for Christmas morning – but I figure I’ll still be reading it then so its ok.)

Anyway – I’m leafing through and find the project by Chris Schwartz on the Arts and Crafts tool cabinet. On page 208 there is a little blurb that says you don’t want to use a magnetic strip to hold tools because it will magnetize your tools which will make them difficult to sharpen.

This is where I confess that I probably slept through science class – Mr. Wise was not the most exciting teacher to listen to. So why would magnetizing a tool make it hard to sharpen?

The filings will stick to the tooling while you are sharpening. Remember the way the magic hair toy worked (draw the beard and hair on the guy with a magnetic stylus).

Interesting, true. But I never thought of that either. Yea, I guess what Doug said.

If Doug is correct, and I’m not saying he’s not, why then is it important to develop a slurry of the filing residue when sharpening?

Inquiring minds.

I just stuck a 3/4” rare earth magnet to the front of my drill press. The chuck key hasn’t been lost since. (Doesn’t relate to sharpening, but it has been a good tip for me)

Rikkor – I do that too. Keeps me from pocketing it, or worse, walking off and laying it down somewhere.

I was thinking about the slurry last night also. But I think slurry is one thing and the waste material sticking othe tool may be another. If it sticks then it is just being buried into the metal the more you rub it. But slurry is like moving it over more cutting material.

I’m not sure my thinking is right. Anyone else have ideas? Science class really was a long time ago and I didn’t pay very close attention.
