That is a magnificant obsession by any definition!
I could not believe the detail in that piece.

The article said it took him four years. My frame of reference being the time it takes me to complete a simple box using power tools, I’m wondering where he found the time to eat and sleep.

Where do you have the space to work on this? especially not have a huge split where it ‘hurts most’ during the 4 years (16 seasons) of carving it.
