I dyed a hardmaple table top with water based dye and applied ArmRSeal which is a oil based urethane in an hour. It is 92F outside and the humidity is very low but I feel I should have waited longer.what worse that could happen with the topcoat ?

I think you should be okay. Water bases dyes dry quickly. I would have waited longer but if your shop has 70 degrees or so, I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

The water base dye no doubt raised the grain a bit. Other than that it shouldn’t be problem. I would wait a full 24 hours before applying the second coat and I would scuff it first lightly w/ 400 grit to knock down any raised grain then apply the second coat.

I know that very well. I ‘scuffed’ it so ‘good’ that after applying the second coat I started seeing scratch lines against the light. Had to resand and redo everything.

Ive had that problem before. LIGHTLY is the key word, you’d be surprised how fine grit papers can leave scratch marks, but usually its scratches from the initial coarser grits that didn’t get totally sanded out. I use the compressor to blow off the wood after every grit, the dust can collect in those scratches making them invisible then I shine a strong flash light at an angle that will show those marks very well. Nothing worse than doing all that work just to find scratch marks at the finish line.
