Does anyone know a list of floor drill presses that can drill through 4×4 wood ? I have several projects lined up and can’t decide if I should just try and buy another Porter Cable PC660 and hope for better results than the one I returned for excess runout. Or if I should look elsewhere.

Budget is low since it will rarely be used but if the value/re-sale is good then I can double the investment up to $800.

I prefer local businesses so I can return easily.

I’ve been thinking about getting the jet 716300. It’s got 5”, but the customer reviews are all over the place.

And then there’s HF’s big one—20 inch swing, etc.

How much run out is acceptable? Most lower priced drill presses will not be that accurate (.004+) for run out.
If you want better accuracy, you might consider looking for an used metal working drill press.

I don’t know how many holes you need to drill but since it will rarely be used, I don’t think I’d drop that much on it. I’d tend towards getting a smaller/cheaper one. Then drill down 2” stop it, extend the drill out of the chuck and drill the rest of the way through.

Now if you have to drill 40 holes, that’s a different story. But if it’s only a dozen or so, I’d deal with the inconvenience to save a couple hundred $.

Watching CL for metal working DP is a good idea too. Most of those have more travel and less runout.

Thanks just bought one last week and it’s still in the SUV. Need to order me 2 sets of HTC wheels for the DP and a BS I plan on getting next week. Got a better deal at $270 with tax including Lowes 5%. I hope to use it a lot for a fun hobby now that I’m retired and bored to death.

I am not good at “creating” much of anything so I will need to take some classes now that I will have easy access to the most common machines and also need some hand tools and will build me a small workbench + vise.

Thanks for everyone’s help but low price and a good rep is good enough for my new fun room. Next I need to find a new portable AC, my old one takes out the hot air but doesn’t cool anymore. There goes another $400-500.

I’ts like jewelry or a gun for me. I rarely use it but nice to know it’s there when I want or need it.

Big T, I’ve had mine for a little less than a year. I’m very pleased with it and have found I use it more than I thought I would. I doubt your going to want that PD on a mobile base. The band saw is a different story.

Bob, I’ll take your advice, I just ordered a Laguna 1412 with the OE mobile base. My DP is still in the SUV but that will change soon since I need the garage ready for the BS delivery next Saturday. Thanks
