Was reading about someone getting ready to finish a purple heart table top. He’s newish as am I to working w hard woods or exotics, Last thing any of us want is to cheap out on finishing after putting 50 hours morphing hard wood. Lately I’ve been sticking with watco danish oil, or varnish and polishing depending if I want mate or a gloss, and how much moisture protection, how much use the table gets may be a worry, runner or dinning. Ya know. I sure would like to hear if anyone has some great ways of finishing that aren’t common. I’ve found one cool book but it seems you have to be a chemist or find “old” ingredients hard to find like spirits of wine, seed lac, on n on…This book I found::::The first American Furniture Finisher’s Manual… a reprint of the cabinet makers guide of 1827. Robert D. Mussy , Jr. for 5.95 It’s very cool to read about the “process” and in depth steps they used to take to bring out beauty in wood…. DOES ANYONE KNOW; A bit about french polishing or has anyone tried it???? I’d like to know more about from someone’s experience . And please share your finishing tricks, tip’s, or labor intensive journey…. Thanks much to all, and have a merry christmas. A woodworkers friend, Patrick Miles. ny.

I make my own finish that I use on probably 90% of the items I make. Some people call it the Maloof finish. It’s equal parts 100% pure raw tung oil(not formbys or any other “tung oil” it has to be pure raw), boiled linseed oil (you can buy boiled linseed oil), and Gloss polyuerathane. I’ll sand the wood to 400 grit and then rub all the surfaces down with 0000 steel wool to smooth it out. I then use a lint free cloth or foam brush and wipe or brush on the mixture. I’ll let it stand for up to 5 minutes and then wipe it off. I’ll wait about 30 minutes and give it another wipe down, just to help smooth it out. Tung oil dries slower and lumpier than poly. The poly and boiled linseed oil both have driers in them, so this will help with drying the tung oil. After about 24 hours, longer if it is cold or humid. I’ll rub down with 0000 steel wool, blow off all dust and wipe on another coat. Wait and few minutes and then wipe off. I’ll repeat this up to 7 times.
You don’t get a glossy finish even though you are using a gloss poly. I have started to put on a coat of wax after the finish has dried for a few days. you can see the results of this on my walnut and quilted maple tray.
This is my favorite finish. Everytime I use it on furniture people just can’t believe how the wood looks and feels.
