Topic tags/keywords: bandsaw saw bench machinery power tools

Hi All,

I have been looking around at different woodworking machinery lately. It appears some brands of machinery are very similar looking, but with different names on them. I live in New Zealand, so the brands that we see are different to those often discussed here on LJ’s (mostly US stuff). Trying to compare product reviews is difficult, but if I can find out which brands are similar, it may help in comaprisons. One example is, I have found a brand of band saw from Carbatec, here in NZ/ Aus that is made in the same factory as Axminster, does anyone know if the Axminster brand (sold in UK) is similar to any of the US brands?

I can’t offer any help as to the brands you named, but will say this: With all the mergers of international companies, etc, many of the “quality name brands” cannot be trusted to have quality when they get outside their signature arena. The best thing is to learn about the machine you are wanting, and then do some research or post on forums like this to find out who has what experience with that brand/type machine. Many brands are made in the same factory, regardless of what country it is located in. The difference is the quality control that the marketing company imposes on the manufacturer.

Carbatec may have the same plant manufacture their machine as Axminster, but the quality they require and have stated in their contract with the manufacturing plant may be better or worse. The same with Axminster and any US company that has their machines made in the same plant.

Brand names are becoming less of quality bench mark for me each day. I put more weight on the reviews of the item from people I know that have experience using it (first), people who have given me sound/sage advice in the past on the internet (second), and people whose reviews show me that they really have some experience in the field and have actually used it (third). Any review that starts with “I just got this and its fantastic” automatically goes in the toilet. Same with those that have no objective judgment on the way it actually performs.

Good luck, and I hope someone with experience with the two companies’ band saws will chime in here.
