Hi Folks,

Brand new to the forum. Always interest in vintage woodworking tools, especially hand planes and old saws. Came across the tool below (photos attached, hopefully), but it’s not marked and I’m wondering if it was use for a specific woodworking task. Any information would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

It’s a shooting plane and board, sometimes spelled as chute plane. They are primarily for trimming and squaring up the ends of a board.

Very interesting design, I don’t recognize it at all. Any marks at all to give a clue as to the manufacturer?

Edit: and welcome to LJ’s.

And what a fantastic find!! I have several Chaplin planes, but I’ve never seen the shooting plane before. Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks, Don! The plane in that photo looks pretty similar to what I’ve got. Any chance you have a clearer photo of that image, so that I can actually read the text and information? Thanks again! Also, any idea about value? :)

Sorry, I was so excited I was shaking. :-)

I’ve added a better picture. That is out of PTAMPIA Vol I EDIT for Vol I not II

As to value, you can see it was $10 new, so I’ll give you $20!!

I actually have no idea on value. I’d make an offer but my wife would get mad if i refinanced the house again.

Edit: and I sent you a PM about post some pictures of it on my website.

Also, Don, any idea about the age of this plane? The brass/bronze parts had me thinking it was earlier, but the board had me thinking later…I’m all confused!

Have your say...
