hi guys, could you guys give me some opinions ‘bout this UNO bedside

i did a replica of it, here it is https://www.facebook.com/konohadecor/photos/?tab=album&album_id=252702671765214

And it’s actually not perfect, the top panel seem to be ‘go down’.

I used screws to joint them, with a hidden flat corner brace and it’s still not good enough.

Help?

Full blind dovetails would be called for in that design, also keep the top short as possible. You’re trying to beat physics here, on your facebook page it looks like you scaled it up and made the top longer. There is really a limit to the length of the unsupported top.

Reinforce the corners with angle steel set into rabbets such that with a bit of filler, they will be hidden.
Join the panels with flathead screws threaded into the angle. (inset 1)
If you use 2”(or wider) x 1/8” angle, the large surface of the angle will allow you to use epoxy or other strong glue (skip the fasteners).
Or cut slots and glue the angle into the slots like a spline. (inset 2)

Thank sir, but dovetails joint would be difficult for me ‘cause i’m really new to woodworking.
I think i’ll make it shorter and smaller overall. I made it 45cm long. Do you think i should make it abotu 35cm?

Nice idea. In insert 1, i could use the router to make steel flush with the wood, do you think after painting i can hide the steel.
In insert 2, do you think biscuit joint can do same thing?

Paint alone would not hide it, only sort of make it blend in. For the side/top connection, it would be hidden enough because it would be in a place few would look. For the side/bottom connection (which is under slightly more stress), it will show, sort of the same way as hinges that have been painted along with the door. If you wish it to be completely hidden, set it slightly below the surface, and go over it with any filler that will bond to both steel and wood. Auto body filler will do it.

I doubt biscuits would make the cut.

If I would have thought of box joints, I would have suggested it. Give it a try.

Best thing to do is try each joint type. Box joints, biscuits, lock miters, angle steel.

Attach 2 1×4s into an L shape, clamp into a vise, hang a bucket on the end and fill the bucket with weights till the joint breaks. Multiply the results by however much wider (front-to-back) the table is than the 1×4.

Matthias Wandel did a few joint strength tests. Those might give you a pretty good idea of what each joint type can do.

Yeah, 45cm is way too long. The top should be around 30cm.

My guess is the original was reinforced with steel dowels then covered with melamine.
