Bad economy for getting donations. I don’t know about others, but there is so much overhead in good cause donations, up to 90%, we just help orgs like the Salvation Army who are low overhead.

Hey, you might want to check out http://www.donorschoose.org Its a fairly new site that has gotten a lot of attention recently for helping schools out. Basically, the teacher or a parent(I believe) can make a request and people can donate to your cause if they think its worthy.

For example, I have a friend who teaches at an inner city school that has no budget. She posted for a digital projection screen($600) to show books and stuff for the entire class and it only took a couple of weeks to get all the donations she needed to purchase it. I would suggest checking this out.

Append: I guess in this case its more for a student than a classroom but keep this site in mind incase they have a class fundraiser for something.
