I’m in the market for a new Bengt mortiser. I’ve looked at several, but the Powermatic seems to have some extra desirable features (many of my power tools are Powermatic so I’m a little partial to them anyway).

I’ve also looked at their tilting model to cut mortises on an angle…a lot more expensive, but it may be worth it.

So, any advice from you folks on a good mortiser and if the tilt version is really worth it?

Thanks.

I have the Jet. It’s a competent machine. I think the table and the fence that comes on the machine are very poor and I replaced both.

Jets and Powermatics are made by the same company with the Jets being the more economical brand. If you are happy with Powermatic, I recommend you stick with it.

I have the Powermatic 701 bench top mortiser. If you go to www.newwoodworker.com you can read a good review on it. I have played around with mine but have not had a chance to use it on a project yet. A friend of mine has one and he really liked it. I guess this is the two reasons why I went with the Powermatic. Good luck on picking a machine.

God Bless

Recently, on this board, there was a post about the importance of sharpening the mortising machine chisels. Regardless of the machine you buy, you should check out that post.

Thanks for all the help. I’ll check out the different machines and the post on sharpening the chisels.
