I am thinking of building interior doors for our house to replace the cheap hollow core doors. Has anyone made red oak 6 panel doors that use 1/4 sawn red oak for stiles and rails then used plain sawn lumber for the raised panels? If you have did they look good? I love the look of 1/4 sawn red oak and it will be more stable than plain sawn oak. I am also thinking of using 8/4 for stiles and rails then gluing up less than 3/4 plain sawn for the panels. all will be milled to 1 3/8 thick. I am thinking the contrast from 1/4 sawn stiles & rails to plain sawn raised panels might look pretty good? I will be using Freuds 99-268 bit setup for stiles and rails, and freuds 99-518 for the raised panels. any thoughts or ideas? I would be greatfull!

Sounds like a winner! Build one and see how you like it.

I think mixing quartersawn and flatsawn red oak often looks pretty bad. That is how furniture factories do it, except no regard for what goes where. Even if the shape and style of the door is spot-on, the grain will be distracting.

If you like flatsawn red oak (I don’t), then just use flat sawn panels and rift sawn rails and stiles. Carefully selected quartersawn red oak projects can look fantastic. They almost look like another species when quartersawn.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I like that head board pintodelux! This is why I am asking before ordering the lumber. If I order 250bf of 1/4 sawn oak and then do not like the look I am stuck :( It is not easy to find pictures of plain and quarter sawn together in doors or other projects.
