Topic tags/keywords: pyrography help ideas

I have saw several colorized wood burnings and I am curious as to best ways go about this and still have a burning.

I have this piece I am working on a Christmas present for my Son. He is all into Rodeo and everything country (my fault).

Anyway, I would like to color the piece and am not quite sure what medium to use. So, given the mountain of knowledge and experience of this group I figured you could give me a few ideas. I look forward to your ideas.

Thanks Guys and Galls!

Hey Buck, That is going to be a really neat burning. I would suggest acrilyic used like water color. You still thin with water so it will raise the grain. You might try thin washes of oil paint with lots of medium. I’d use Grumbacher #3 medium. It drys pretty fast. Some use artist’s transparent water colors. I wouldn’t use Gouache, too opaque. Which ever you try it will be really neat and he’ll like it.

I have always used oil colored pencils. You can find Walnut Hollow oil pencils in Michaels, and I think I’ve seen them in Walmart. First put a light spray of a sealer on your piece before coloring it..I use Deft Matt Finish. If you want it more transparent just lightly touch the wood with the color you want and then take a Q-Tip or a paper shading stub and dip it in a thinner for oils and go over the color and it will blend your pencil strokes and it will look like a wash. I always watched Cowboy U and they always said Cowboy Up. Hope this helps…”Keep burning and learning”...Dannie

Thank you Danette. I have found the pencils and have been finishing them with spray lacquer.
