After reading everything I can find online regarding dust collection, including Bill Pentz’ blog, I have decided to go with a Grizzly 0703 or a 0703P cyclone as my first real dust collector. It will fit nicely into my garage shop and should have adequate airflow for my needs (3 hp table saw, band saw, router table and drill press, one at a time). Plus it can be converted to 220. I think for the amount I will be using it, the ability to put the unit outside my garage door some of the time, one of these units will suffice. The only major negative I can come up with is the noise, but I use ear protection, but it is still a concern.
I have noticed that there are differences in the two units, besides the color. Comparing all the part numbers, the two biggest differences are the cone and the motor assembly. From the website photos, I cannot see any differences in the motor assemblies, except the remote receiver box that sits next to it. However, the cones are different. The 0703P is one piece and the 0703 is two piece, at least according to the photos.
When the 0703 was first introduced, the noise was rated at 65db. This showed up in the Dec/Jan 2011 AWW article on cyclones. They did not test it for the article, it was listed as a mfg. spec. This number still shows up on the Grizzly website. If interested, go to the G0703 page, click the Comparison tab, then Other Specifications, 65db. This is something that probably just needs to be cleaned up and I doubt if 65 db real, but I do wonder if the db of the two units are different. I have a hard time thinking both units have the same performance curves if the cones are different, so maybe the db is different.
I doubt if anyone has compared the two side by side, but if you have, any thoughts? If anyone has purchased a 0703, in the last year or so, is the cone really a two piece as shown in the website photos? How is the noise level compared to other tools, dust collectors, etc? Have you measured the db, even if you measure it with an app on your phone? Is there a difference between the two units in quality/results, dust in the bag, etc? Any help/advice would be appreciated. The price difference is $200 as long as the 0703P lasts and I do not want to spend it if I do not have to.
