It is Friday morning and I have a short work day today. I have a bunch of lumber, all day Saturday and about a dozen or so projects on my “TO DO” list. I’m sitting here sipping on a cup of coffee trying to decide which project/s I am going to try to knock off my list this weekend. I usually make my decision based on either, materials that I have on hand, or priority/need of the completed project. This weekend, it is all about just spending time in the shop and having some fun making something/anything that I want. I was wondering how you guys go about choosing or deciding what projects to build when you have time to simply create in the shop?

I have a fairly long list of projects (over 40) on my to-do list. Some of the projects have firm deadlines and I have to give them priority. Other projects have what I call “soft deadlines”. For example, a nephew has a birthday in June and I want to make something special for him. I have to think ahead and plan for these soft deadline projects.

After accounting for the various deadlines, I like to give priority to the projects that really interest me the most. Often those are projects that require me to do something I have not done before.

This weekend I will finish work on the prototype of a pew end panel in time for a meeting of the church’s design committee on Monday evening. I will also (try to) turn a whistle on the lathe. The pew end project is a “have to do” with a deadline. The whistle is a project that really intrigues me ever since I read a “how to” article in an old woodworking magazine.

As an FYI – I will be heading up a project to build new pew end panels for our entire church (80 panels) this spring/summer. I’ll have some help – but this will be a big project.
