My question is how’s the pickup? It looks like a whole lot of weight for any pickup. Enjoy, boy what fun! Dalec |

I’m going to pressure wash the root and cut away whatever turing pieces I can get and seal. Ill trim the ends of logs flat and seal. The trunk is to heavy so I’ll mill that in 3 pieces and seal. I’m goingto Lowes to get a gallon of thompsens or olympic weather sealer. Any other ideas will be appreciated. The pickup….1/2 ton, I took 3 trips. We drove that ol mule through the carwash so shes all smiles now. I desperatly need a dual axle trailer. |

Gavel down on a cool horse trade. I can here the auctioneer’s spiel in my head (some ancient tobacco ad from my youth, I think) – SOLD AMERICAN! -- "Bordnerizing" perfectly good lumber for over a decade. |
|
Now…Pardon my ignorance but I usually deal in veneers, never in my life bought green logs to turn into lumber…What should I do with these when they get here in Montreal? I was thinking to bring them right away to a sawmill and have half of it milled into nice wide boards 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick and keep the bark on both sides (for funky tabletops) then to have all the boards kiln dried. The other half of it I would bring to have sliced in nice 1/16’’ thick veneers (many veneer plants around here). |
|
Leave them in your shop. Sample a small piece for kiln drying. I’ve never kiln dried, so I couldnt tell you. If I mill a piece and leave it out, it checks. Tung oil aint enough finish/sealer either. Be a professional with this wood, it sure does require it. Anchor seal unused portions. I use to use sulifain/ plastic wrap to preserve wood, that seemed to worked good. |

Hey Boots, The ebony logs made it to Montreal. They arrived this morning at the Yellow depot. I went to do the paperwork today to clear the logs from customs and didn’t have any major problem (except they asked to see my bank statement for this transaction…so I had to pay the taxes on the real amount. No biggie.) Yellow will bring the logs at my shop tomorrow at no extra cost. I found someone with a portable sawmill to cut my logs into lumber and If it’s nice, I’ll have some of it sliced into veneer at a veneer mill. Of course I’ll post pictures of the finished product here. |

I’ll take whatever advice you or anybody else here on LJ can give me about precautions I should take with that ebony before and after sawing… I’m totally new at this…I called a Wood-Mizer retailer they told me to use a 4 degrees blade. The guy who will cut my ebony owns a LT-40 model … Do you know if any lubricant is required while sawing ebony? Can the slabs wait for 3 weeks before going to the kiln-dryer/veneer plant? Should I keep the slabs wet and wrapped in plastic until then or just seal them and leave them uncovered in my heated shop?? How should I stack the boards? How much space should I leave between the sticks? Not much info available on the Net about this…Thanks in advance guys! |
|
I dont use any lube so I dont stain wood, I think you should use anchorseal for any pieces not in use. |
|
If you are not going to get this in a kiln immediately you will need to sticker with at least 1 inch squares every 2 feet. You will then need to put weight evenly across the entire lot of cut wood. If you have it outdoors you will need to cover with a plastic tarp. Get that in a kiln asap! Sharp tools are needed to work ebony and dust protection is critical. -- Genius is immediate, but talent takes time. |

Here are my ebony boards. Tough wood to cut: the poor guy destroyed 7 blades on his Wood-Mizer LT40 hydrolic! To make matters worse, a brass hook was hidden in the middle of the trunk, we cut it in 2! (good it wasn’t steel!) Most of the boards look pretty nice except for 2 thick ones that came from the middle of the trunk, which was predictable. Not sure if I will bring some boards to the veneer plant: most have irregular shapes that would make bookmatching impossible and trimming them straight would be a pity… I might buy a killer carbide bandsaw blade and slice my own veneer when needed instead. I am starting to build a kiln dryer now…To be continued.

My shop stinks!!! OMG what an awful smell this wood has when wet! I will put it in a kiln to dry ASAP. I was told by some that the wood dust was toxic but I really don’t think it is. There were 4 of us standing around the Woodmizer while cutting the logs and none of us wore a mask or gloves. Nobody dropped dead or even sneezed. |

Just as I got down to the last ebony log (listed on ebay, with a interest), a huge ebony tree lands in my lap…. I’ve been given a ebony tree, the biggesst i’ve been able to cut to date. I’ve been watching it for years, in a high traffic commercial lot with a couple of rental shacks or units. So I seen the tenants move out and the owner put up a huge “for sale by owner sign”. 2+2 = I better act quik. Certainly this will be a commercial piece of real estate and most developers remove over sized trees asap. A blessing as far as I’m concerned! EBONY AVAILABLE! I’ll post pics soon. |

Update about the logs I bought: I been busy teaching at the shop these last few months but I finally found the time to build my kiln dryer a couple weeks ago. I am still tweeking it,making changes to it to get the temperature inside at what it should be. It gets too hot in the box so the dehumidifier keeps shutting down. Hasn’t been an easy task I must say. Not sure if I would go to all this trouble again. Can’t wait to get this ebony dry and ready for use. |

i wonder if ebony smells when its being dried. i know that i hate its smell more than any other wood I’ve used! man once I’m done with that stuff all i want to do is leave my shop. |
