My mother in law wants me to make her a cedar chest for Christmas. Of course she wants it for christmas so I have to buy the materials but that is the way it goes. I could make a plain old box but was really wanting to do something a little nicer ( I actually like my mother in law) so I was wondering if anyone had a nice design for a cedar chest.

Thanks in advance.

I’d suggest you write ‘Blanket Chest’ in the upper search box at the top of the page. It gives many pages of designs LJs have posted, and maybe you’d find a design you like.

There are several Arts & Crafts designs, New Yankee Workshop did a steamer trunk, and so did TheWoodWhisperer. Good luck! At least you’re starting early.

I recently found out that my mother-in-law wants a maple cutting board, which gave the wife a twinkle in her eye too. I may be joining the cutting board fraternity sooner than expected.

I adapted Norm Abrams’ blanket chest design (which is favorable towards a Shaker design) to be a blanket chest. Mine was walnut with eastern red cedar on the inside. I just added thin strips of eastern red cedar and it works quite well. Buy Norm’s book for plans or get the plans and DVD from new yankee workshop website.
