I am repurposing these vintage carts. I am wondering how I can seal the metal without using a spray can clear coat. Can i use Shilac, or anything else that will seal them, but look very nice? Think Restoration Hardware!

Thanks for the help. The rest of the wood I am just going to paint and sand, some I may stain. Not sure if I will seal the wood.

Many of the rust neutralizers turn the rust black. You an also use Penetrol. Many people say it works well and it doesn’t change things much in so far as appearance goes.

You can get Penetrol at any paint store.

If you treat them with evapo-rust then wire brush them they will look great as is. In an indoor environment no further treatment should be needed. If you want to make them black, then gun blue them.

Evaporust cost way to much for what I am trying to do, and that will also get on the wood.

I think any sealing will cost more than Inwant anyway, maybe I can figure something out.

Boiled linseed oil works great on rusty iron. Preserves the look and stops further rust. Just be sure to wipe it all off after application or it will be sticky.
