I have the opportunity to pick up an almost brand new Minimax 12” jointer/planer combo. It is the FS30 model and looks like it retails around $4500. It was at an auction next to my house and didn’t sell. I contacted the owner of the estate and he said he would like to get $1200 out of it. I’m fairly new to wood working and I haven’t heard of this brand or seen anything like this before. Should I jump on this unit at that price. Seems like a steal for a 12” jointer and then add in the thickness planer as well.

Mini max is one of the premium European brands and you should have no qualms over the quality built into that tool. Combo machines give you a lot of tool for minimum space; detractors will point out they (J/P models) have short tables that aren’t as good for long work pieces. There’s also the changeover stuff to deal with. I don’t see either as a negative. They way I see it: that’s a good price on a good machine and will serve you well. I think you should give it careful consideration.

Probably I’ve heard nothing but good reviews about mimimax.Esp bandsaws. Its worth having a serious look.

Although you are jumping ahead of the natural order of woodworking.First you should start with some junky tools.
If your lust for woodworking survives making stuff with the junky tools then you can advance to the next level.:)

Thanks! It was an old man who had the stuff and it all looks brand new. I’m picking up a woodmaster drum sander for $600 and I was considering the jointer. He also had the minmax bandsaw and the 8ft sliding table saw. Selling all of it for really cheap, just wish I had the cash to buy it all!!

For $1200 I’d jump on it.

You didn’t describe the BS, but those are 1) in short supply (used ones) and 2) may be well worth more than he wants. Might be worth digging deep to get that as well.

$1200 is a steal and worth jumping on. The knives on this are indexed… so you just slide them out to replace. It’s not like most jointers which require a lot of fiddling to get the knives aligned.

I think you should buy it all from him. Can’t you sell your car or a kidney to raise the money? :-)

I would get it even if only for the jointer. Just getting a 12” will let you work with wider boards. Even if I had a lunchbox jointer, I would get it and use it exclusively for the jointer.

2nd mortgage on the house might be in order for this opportunity :)

Definitely YES! I have the older model FS35 and it is one quality machine. The wide jointer is a luxury you will be glad to have. Mine has a 3hp motor and guessing that one does also. The planer is much faster than a lunchbox. I bet you can easily resell it for more than double.

I have a minimax cu300 which has the 12 j/p. It is a dream, I would buy it in a nanosecond form1200.00. Changing the blades is beyond easy, and it planes better than my 18” woodmaster with a helix head. Get the band saw too.

Did you decide to get it? Just curious.

I’m getting the drum sander and the jointer. The table saw I would love to get but don’t have the cash right at the moment for all. Sure wish I did. A complete wood shop for 5 grand would be awesome.

But I shared this offer with a good friend so we are going in on all of it. He’s getting the bandsaw and tablesaw. He has more room for it…and I can borrow. :)
