I am debating whether to buy a new WEN 6530 planer from Amazon for $40 or an old ryobi ZRHPL51K (lightly used) on craigslist for $40. Of course the new one comes with a warranty but I am in India so it will probably be too costly for me to return it. I will have a friend buy either one and test it before he brings it to India for me.
I’ve looked at the reviews in amazon and folks seem to be generally happy with both. There was one complaint about the WEN removing wood at 0 setting – but I’ve seen such complaints even with Bosch and Makita. I think there are some quality control issues with all brands and that’s just one’s luck – at least I will get someone to test both of these once. Other than testing the basic functionality of the tool to make sure it cuts the right depth and does not cut deeper on one side and the front and back are flat and aligned is there anything else to look out for? Any long term pros/cons of one v/s the other (eg. about maintainance/availability of spares)? One customer did say that the RYOBI spares were difficult to get and that their customer service was not very helpful.
I am looking to plane some neem planks I had cut at a mill from a tree that had dried out in front of my house.
