Topic tags/keywords: planer question

My Delta 13” 2 speed planer is jammed up. I noticed it was not pulling the boards through very well requiring me to push. I put in new blades, lubricated the raising and lowering mechanisms, cleaned it alll out; I noticed that the transmission between the two speeds was a little touchy; the rollers would not turn unless I pushed the switch all the way over one side; after messing with it for a while, I had it sideways, when I turned it on to test it, and the gears somewhere or something got jammed and the motor is stressing real bad and nothing is turning so I shut it off within seconds;

I was going to take it apart to see what I could find but thought I would post this first.

Any ideas would be most appreciated it.

Did you have it running when you changed speeds? The machine has to be running when you switch speeds. I routinely clean the feed rollers with Denatured Alcohol and polish the table with wax. If it is jammed it should throw a breaker. There is a reset button on the machine. You might try putting the speed switch back to where it was. This is about all I’ve ever done to mine. I never take more than 1/32 off at a time. That is 1/2 turn of the wheel. Other wise, it needs to go to the repair shop.

Happened to me also and it was due to the fact that the speed switch was not fully engaged (it has to click and the machine has to be running). I freaked out like you did but it turned out not to be a problem.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I am pleased to report that my planer is working!

Here is what I did: I jiggled the switch for a while but it remained jammed. I took the covers off (4 allen keys) and 4 screws to remove plastic cover, did not find any wood jammed in the gears, chain, or belt. I blew it all out with air, regreased the chain and spayed lub where it needed it; then it was still jammed. Here was the deal: the cover over the blades presses down a switch, (the switch you have to press down to spin the drum while changing blades) when I manually pressed the switch, and turned it on, the motor ran just fine! It is hard to say for sure but it is possible that the blade guard was not pressing down that switch. I would rather waste an hour cleaning a machine and feel stupid than waste an hour and $400 buying a new one! Anyway, I am glad its working and thank you much for your replies.

Have your say...
