I’m in the market for a drum sander mostly to make thin strips of wood for segmenting (1/8 – 1/16 thick). Almost bought the supermax this past weekend but they didn’t have on in stock at my local woodcraft so I held off. Now the Jet is on sale and it is also cheaper so I end up saving around $400.

From my understanding they are pretty much the same machine, the frames look very similar and I was told Supermax builds the Jets. I have seen both models and the Supermax is a tad larger and the bed is slightly oversized which I like.

Anyone actually used both machines? should I just go buy the Supermax? While the $400 in savings would be nice it’s not a huge factor in the purchase… I want the better machine.

I have never used the SuperMax, but I have a Jet 16/32 and love it. I use it for not only segmented rings, but also for any light thicknessing work I need (I kept my planer for heavier work, but seldom use it).

As I understand it, the genesis on these machines goes back to the original Performax sanders. As I recall, Jet acquired Performax, and a few years later, former Performax people founded SuperMax, which is probably why the machines are so similar.

I have heard good things about the SuperMax … my take is that you wouldn’t be mking a mistake with either machine, which makes it more of a budgetary decision.

I have a dual 25” supermax, it’s a great machine. You won’t be disappointed.
BTW, you can buy rolls of sandpaper from Industrial Abrasives and cut your own strips for much less than the pre-cut strips
